WPA provides stronger data encryption. WPA uses Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP), a protocol that provides per-packet key mixing, a message integrity check, and a stronger IV with keys that are not reused for longer periods of time. WPA requires 802.1x authentication to ensure that only authorized users or computers are allowed to connect to a wireless network. 802.1x authentication is optional with WEP.

Windows XP Professional includes a feature called Zero Client Configuration that eases the detection of and connection to wireless networks, and also makes transitions from one wireless network to another more transparent to users. Windows XP Professional supports both ad-hoc and infrastructure wireless networking, and also supports both WEP and WPA encryption.

When Windows XP Professional first shipped, it did not include support for WPA. Support was provided later via the Windows WPA Client Update, available at http://support.microsoft .com/Default.aspx kbid=815485. However, WPA support is also included with Windows XP Service Pack 2 without needing to use this client update.

All of the Windows operating systems have an application called System Information, which can display extensive information about the hardware and software configuration of the local computer or another computer on the network. System Information can provide all of the essential inventory information listed earlier, and a great deal more. You can save the reported information to a System Information file with an .nfo extension, for later access, or to a text file. In Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP, System Information is accessible from the Start menu, in the All Programs\Accessories\System Tools\ folder. Launching the program displays a system summary for the local computer, as shown in Figure 1-8. This page includes processor and memory information.

After installing a wireless network adapter, Windows XP Professional attempts to locate wireless networks in the area automatically. When Windows locates a network, it displays an icon in the notification area (a picture of a computer with wireless waves coming out of it). Windows also displays a ScreenTip (a pop-up notification balloon) above that icon, letting you know that it has detected wireless networks. To connect to a wireless network, use these steps: 1. Right-click the wireless connection icon in the notification area, and then click View Available Wireless Networks.

Hibernate reads the resultset of the SQL query and tries to discover the column names and types as defined in your mapping metadata. If the column CATEGORY_ NAME is returned, and it s mapped to the name property of the Category class, Hibernate knows how to populate that property and finally returns fully loaded business objects.

Windows displays the Wireless Network Connection dialog box, shown in Figure 15-19. This dialog box shows you each network Windows XP has detected and also the security status of the network (whether it is unsecured or secured).

The * in the SQL query projects all selected columns in the resultset. The automatic discovery mechanism therefore works only for trivial queries; more complex queries need an explicit projection. The next query returns a collection of Item objects:

2. Click the wireless network to which you want to connect, and then click Connect. If the network to which you are connecting is unsecured (which means unencrypted), Windows displays a warning to that effect and asks whether you are sure you want to connect. 3. Click Yes. Windows refreshes the Wireless Network Connection window to show that you are now connected to the wireless network. Proceed to Step 5. If the wireless network to which you want to connect is secure, Windows displays a dialog box asking you to type the appropriate network key. 4. Type and confirm the network key, and then click Connect. Windows refreshes the Wireless Network Connection window to show that you are now connected to the wireless network. 5. Close the Wireless Network Connection window. After making the connection to a network, you can right-click the connection icon in the notification area to disable or repair the connection, or to view open network connections.
